The wedding was at the end of World War II with Germany surrendering on 7 May 1945 and Japan on 14 August 1945. Food rationing was still in effect. A week's butter ration was 2 oz per person per week. Jessie and Basil White collected butter from friends and made the wedding cake.

The reception was at Dorothy's home, 40 Crab Street, Ipswich.
